as many know, the words to Silent Night (Stille Nacht) were written by one of Jerry Mohr's distant progenitors, great-great grandfather I think or
something like it. anyhow, I went to the annual New York City Gay Men's Chorus holiday concert at Carnegie Hall (no I'm not, not that there's
anything wrong with it; they have fun holiday concerts) the other day, and every year they do a rendition of Silent Night that is indescribably beautiful. Not
so much for the vocal arrangement, which is lovely enough, but for the way they always do the last verse: silently, using just their hands and arms,
"singing" in sign language, to the beat of the very skillful conductor. I don't know why but I always find this one of the highlights of the
show, and I've been going for many years. I wonder if any other choral groups do that (this group always has a sign language interpreter for all of their
shows, not just this song). a truly silent, silent night.
